Stanley Kubrick's' the Shining is set in the Overlook Hotel - a mysterious and paranormal place isolated from human civilization. The main characters, Jack and Wendy along with their son Danny, take on the responsibility of caring for the hotel during its winter off season. From November to May the hotel is closed, there is only one road up to the hotel, and winter storms serve to isolate the location from civilization.
To the main characters, this hotel seems completely normal, aside from the mention that the hotel was built on indian burial grounds who comes from the owner, Mr. Ullman. Initially the couple seems to enjoy their time in the grandeur of the Hotel, but their initial impression soon changes as Danny begins to notice paranormal occurences about the hotel, including seeing glimpses of dead little girls around corners and hallways flooding with blood, instigated by the little boy who lives in his mouth, Tony.
He has the power of “The Shining” as Mr. Halloran tells him - to speak to someone without spoken words and witness things that have yet happened. The Overlook Hotel has this mysterious phenomenon, and Tony begins to sense something dark from room 237. He later goes into the room and a hot naked woman attempts to strangle him.
Jack (pictured right), Danny’s father, loves the Hotel, but begins to lose his mind - typing phrases over and over repeatedly and redundantly and multiple times. From this he begins to succumb to fits of anger and violence to his family. He has a fantasy in which he speaks with the old caretaker, and the caretaker says to him, “You’ve always been the caretaker.”
As Jack’s rage further slips beyond his control, seemingly being more and more consumed by the negative spirits trapped in the hotel, he isolates them completely and destroys their SnowCat, the only transportation they have and also their radio. This puts the already isolated location of the Overlook Hotel completely beyond the reaches of civilization. They are completely cut off, both with communication, and now physical access from the outside world.
Jack wants to stay forever, but naturally Wendy and Danny, who still have grips on their sanity, want nothing more than to escape. Danny uses his power of the Shining to call Mr. Halloran to them and reach out beyond the isolation of the Overlook Hotel to the outside world. Through the paranormal abilities of the Shining, Mr Halloran is able to hear Danny and comes to their rescue only to get killed by Jack.
As Wendy and Danny are running for their lives away from an axe-flailing psychotic Jack, they notice skeletons and corpses littered about the halls and rooms of the increasingly paranormal hotel. The evil spirits consumed Jack’s mind. Wendy is terrified and only wants to get Danny to safety from this evil place and away from her psychotic husband. She quickly comes to the conclusion that the Snow Cat that Mr. Halloran drove up in is their only means of escape. Jack chases Danny into the Hedge Maze who is clever enough to leave the deranged Jack behind and makes it back to the SnowCat so he and Wendy can make their escape.
The movie ends with a mysterious picture of The July 4th Ball in 1921 of a big group of of people and Jack is in the very front of the picture. Leaving us to question if his soul had always been trapped there.
